Cash vs Card in Bali: What You Need to Know

A few years ago, Bali was a strictly cash-only society. Today, the landscape has completely transformed, but cash is still heavily utilized in certain areas. Here is how to handle your money smart.

Cards are king in the South

In heavily touristed areas like Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu, and central Ubud, almost every restaurant, cafe, and beach club accepts major credit cards (VISA and Mastercard).

  • Apple Pay / Google Pay: Contactless payments are becoming ubiquitous in modern establishments via EDC machines.
  • Card Surcharges: Be aware that many smaller businesses will add a 2% to 3% surcharge for paying with a card. Keep an eye on your receipt.

When do you need Cash (IDR)?

You will absolutely need Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for:

  • Local warungs (street food and small local restaurants)
  • Tipping your drivers or villa staff
  • Paying for parking or toll roads
  • Small purchases at traditional markets or convenience stores
  • Entrance fees to remote waterfalls or temples

ATMs and Fees

  • Use Bank ATMs: Always use ATMs attached to actual bank branches (like BCA, Mandiri, or BNI) rather than freestanding generic ATMs in convenience stores, which are heavily targeted by card skimmers.
  • Withdrawal Limits: Most ATMs have a maximum withdrawal limit of 2,500,000 IDR to 3,000,000 IDR per transaction.
  • The "Card Left Behind" Trap: Warning! Indonesian ATMs dispense your cash before returning your card. Countless tourists take their cash and walk away, leaving their card in the machine.

Exchanging Money

If you bring foreign currency (USD, AUD, EUR), only use authorized, air-conditioned money changers with glass doors and security guards (like BMC or Central Kuta). Never use the small money exchange shacks in back alleys offering rates that look "too good to be true." They employ sleight-of-hand tricks to shortchange you.

💳 Smart Tip: Need to top up your e-wallet or order emergency transport? You'll need data for your banking apps. Our BaliESIMs provide a secure, encrypted 5G connection, far safer than logging into your bank on public cafe WiFi.
