Getting Around Bali: Gojek vs Grab Guide
When you arrive in Bali, you'll quickly notice that public transport is practically non-existent. To get around, tourists and locals alike rely on two dominant super-apps: Gojek and Grab.
Here is everything you need to know about navigating the "Island of the Gods" safely and cheaply.
The Contenders
Gojek: The Indonesian hometown hero. Easily recognizable by their green jackets. Gojek is generally known for having slightly lower prices on motorbike rides (GoRide) and food delivery (GoFood). Because it's a local company, it has deep integration into the Balinese economy.
Grab: The Southeast Asian giant (originally from Malaysia/Singapore). Grab often has more cars available (GrabCar) and slightly better English support within the app UI. Their food delivery service (GrabFood) frequently runs massive promotional discounts.
Which one should you use?
Download both. Prices surge dynamically based on demand and weather. If it rains in Bali, prices can double or triple instantly. Having both apps allows you to compare prices and arrival times before booking.
Local Transport "Red Zones"
Be critically aware that certain tourist areas (like Canggu, Ubud, and parts of Uluwatu) have local taxi "mafias." These local driver associations sometimes ban Gojek and Grab cars from picking up passengers in their territory to protect their own livelihoods.
- Motorbikes (GrabBike/GoRide) are usually tolerated everywhere.
- If you are calling a car in a "red zone," the driver might ask you via chat to walk to a main road or a designated pickup point outside the village. Always be respectful of these local dynamics.
How to set them up
You will need an active internet connection and a phone number to register an account. You can link your home country credit card to both apps (VISA/Mastercard work flawlessly), which means you don't have to fiddle with cash.
📱 Critical Tip: You cannot order a Gojek or Grab at the airport without an internet connection! Secure your connection before you fly by purchasing a BaliESIM. Scan the QR code before your flight, and your phone will automatically connect the second you land in Denpasar.
